Job Market and Engineering graduates in India during Covid-19
The Covid-19 pandemic has eroded the global socio-economic order and could possibly be the most poignant event in the past 100 years.
Though it has hit anything and everything but the consequential impact on the Job Market is alarming.
Unemployment in engineering segment has always been an area of concern, but this phase has turned out to be even more fierce.
7 in 10 engineers – representing almost equal numbers of men and women – are currently looking out for a job, finds a survey by IP-driven incubation lab BridgeLabz Solutions.
The survey also suggests that finding a job amidst this coronavirus situation has emerged as the top challenge for fresh graduates and experienced professionals with a majority of engineers, at 76.89%, presently bearing the brunt of the economic slowdown.
In the previous years, Summer-Internships have paved the way of pre-employment offers for many fresh college graduates. But this year, such opportunities has been whipped out by the lock-down phase in many states. Certain companies have either called-off the internships for this year or are still uncertain to announce the date of joining, whereas some on the brighter side are offering Online Internship opportunities to candidates.
The Increasing Competition and the mounting unemployment
According to the All India Survey of Higher Education by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Engineering and MBA graduates accounted for around 16 lakh graduates last year, and the numbers may be expected to be comparable for 2020.
In this corona crisis, when the previously employed professionals are losing jobs, companies are getting shut and employment options are bleak, there is a quantum leap in the unemployed section of the society.
To be precise, the job opportunities are slipping downwards and the number of job seekers are rising upwards. Now, when will this situation bounce back to normal, is the question of the hour, with no concreate answer to it.
But we are gradually moving to a zone, where “Only the fittest will survive this competitive era”.
How do engineers secure a job during this Covid-19 situation?
Skill is the only weapon to fight this war against unemployment.
Now, the choice is yours to make, that what kind of a weapon you would like to use,
- The traditional one
- The advanced one
- The multi-utility
- Go all-in
Remember, you need to ‘stand out’ for the employers to employ you. Hence, utilize this phase to up-skill and leverage your skills for better employment and salary pay- package. Look for Industry-demand driven courses which uplift your drafting, designing, simulation, analytical and project management skills.
Look for a platform which connects you to Industry and once you get the opportunity don’t let it slip from your hands.
When the opportunities are limited, the opportunity cost is even more. So, brace yourself and hone your skills to fall in line with the Industry need.
If you are currently in first or second year of engineering, you still have time to act. If you know AutoCAD that’s good but don’t be under the impression that it is enough. Gone are those days when learning AutoCAD was a choice, today it is mandatory or the most basic skill a company expects an engineer to have, either you be from Mechanical, Civil, Electric or Electronic field. So, move towards gaining expertise in Product Design and Development tools. As an engineer, you must have a career sketch for yourself. If you are a Mechanical engineer you may aspire to have a career related to Aerospace, Aircrafts, Automobiles, Designing, HVAC, Modelling, etc. In case you are a Civil Engineer you may look up to Structural Designing and Analysis, Highway Development, Road Construction, Building Design or many more.
In case you have not figured out your options, go ahead and contact an academic career counsellor now. There is a list of popular Industry demanded softwares for engineers. You may click here to know more about such courses.
